A while back I was contacted by Peter, host of Rock Daydream Nation on YouTube, a popular classic rock podcast that frequently collaborates with classic rock fans and is very focused on albums. That’s what I love about the classic rock era, albums were actually meaningful and aimed to be all killer and no filler, albums were an experience from the artwork to the packaging to the presentation and some even told a story – those are called concept albums.
Some bands are very well known for excellent discographies. In my opinion, the two rock bands with the best ever overall discographies are The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. The consistency in quality is there. The Beatles had never released a bad album and they ended strong, on a good note. Sure, I have albums that I like more than others, like I’m personally a Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Abbey Road kind of girl and I wasn’t as keen on The White Album and Let It Be, but both of those albums had strong moments and they’re good albums, but not my favourite Beatles ones. Led Zeppelin come pretty darn close and I adore all their work from Led Zeppelin I to Houses of the Holy. Physical Graffiti has some great songs, but I didn’t like it as much as their early work, sue me for that take! Trajectory wise, I see similarities between Zeppelin and The Who and Pink Floyd, a couple of other all-time favourites. Great run at the start, but then things go downhill. Personally, I didn’t like much of The Who’s work post-Quadrophenia and I think Pink Floyd were weak after The Wall. But that’s another take for another time.
So when I was asked to be part of a podcast episode about my favourite Zeppelin song from each album, I was happy to take part and there’s a little tie in with my book, as Led Zeppelin are one of a few bands with multiple chapters. The other two are The Who and The Kinks. If a part 2 does come out, I have a plan for another Beach Boys chapter. 😉

I didn’t want to be too cliched with my picks, but hey sometimes the cliched choice is still a good one because there’s a reason those songs are popular.
