My First ever talk as an author

I’m a bit odd in some ways and one of those ways is I get really anxious in conversations and I’m extremely introverted. The Disappointed Cillian Murphy meme is probably the best way I can describe myself in social situations. No really, I was clinically diagnosed with anxiety when I was 7 years old. But there’s one situation where I never got anxious and that is in performing. I’m sure you can tell by my look and the energy I give that I’m a former theatre kid. I acted in a few plays at summer camp (never school though because the theatre teachers hated me) and I loved doing karaoke in front of an audience even though I’m not a good singer. I loved doing improv in university. The last time I did anything theatre was in undergrad in university, but I was just doing behind the scenes stuff and I quite like that too. I also used to have a radio show in university and one of my friends from the radio station said that I’m like two different people: normally I’m very shy and don’t talk very much but as soon as I step into the booth and turn on the mic, I light up and that’s because I’m talking about what I love most: classic rock! I had that moment again earlier this week when I gave my talk. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous before giving the talk but I’m just glad it was a success for me, any sale is a success and the fact that people were engaged and asking questions and didn’t walk out on my talk is a win for me. I’m celebrating. Here’s to more talks!

If you couldn’t make it to Coventry, no problem, I had my husband Eoin film the talk so you can watch it. I did not have a script and I didn’t practise beforehand. I really had no life for the last few years. All I was doing until recently was reading about true crime and rock and roll. It was like a PhD thesis compressed into a shorter period of time. If you follow me on Instagram, you can watch the talk here.

I’ve uploaded the talk to YouTube for all to see:

Thank you Coventry Central Library for having me give a talk!

If you want to see the Powerpoint slides more clearly, I’ve uploaded the screenshots below (amended one of them because I forgot to finish a sentence):

Hope you enjoyed the talk!
